It’s hard to believe the days of a photographer with a smaller camera may be behind us.
Utah is no longer a hotbed of wedding photography and it appears to be growing into its own unique culture.
According to Utah Wedding Photographers, they’re on pace to grow from 935 photographers in 2016 to over 1,400 in 2022.
That means an additional 100 photographers in 2022 will be new to the state of Utah.
The numbers are staggering.
Utah has become the most popular destination for wedding photographers.
The state ranks second in the country for weddings with about 6,500 weddings taking place.
A lot of these photographers are taking their craft to new and creative directions.
There’s a lot of new, cutting edge photography in the area and the talent is coming through.
“It’s the type of thing we do that we don’t normally get a chance to see, that is the beauty of it,” said Jeffery Ruggiero, a photographer from Boise, Idaho.
“I think we’ve got to continue to push our limits, keep pushing our boundaries and keep getting to the places we’re supposed to be.”
As the Utah Wedding Photography industry matures, the new photographers have started to look to the bigger cameras for inspiration.
The newest addition to the team is photographer Rick Wicks.
Ricks, who is from the Salt Lake City area, says that his biggest challenge is that he needs to find photographers that he can get to work with.
He is the youngest of the new team members, and he has no idea how to get his gear.
“I’ve only been working with the big-sizes for a little bit, and they’re not always great,” he said.
“And sometimes, I’ll go to them and they’ll tell me, ‘Oh, it’s not for you because it’s too big.’
But I have no idea.”
The new photographers are hoping to find some inspiration from the big cameras.
For one, Ruggiers favorite photographers are working with big-size cameras.
He’s also excited about the possibility of shooting weddings with more compact cameras.
“It would be really cool to shoot with something like a 16-megapixel, and have it on the back of a truck,” he told The Salt Lake Tribune.
While Ruggies experience with the smaller cameras may be limited, he is hopeful that they will inspire others.
“The only way to find inspiration in this business is to find people that are already shooting big cameras and to see what they’re like,” he added.
The new Utah wedding photographer team has grown from 9 people in 2016.
The new team is now aiming to grow to about 1,000 photographers in 2019.
